TIMES2025 – Concept Statement

TIMES2025 is the latest installment in an ongoing series that began in 2016, with its origins traceable back to Reflex-3D (2011). This work is constructed as an interface that generates a pseudo-three-dimensional image within the viewer’s eyes by utilizing horizontal visual disparity. In other words, through the manipulation of spatial perception based on stereoscopic vision, it poses a fundamental question about the very act of “seeing.”

The three-dimensional image presented here triggers distinct visual experiences for each viewer. In this sense, the work challenges the assumption that everyone is seeing the same thing, aiming instead to visualize the subjectivity and constructed nature of perception. What and how does the perceiving subject — the condition upon which the work exists — actually see? Or rather, what does one intentionally overlook?

Under the proposition that “people only try to see what they can see,” this work attempts a critical intervention into the structure of visual cognition itself. It is designed as a space that evokes, through direct experience, the question of how discrepancies between perception and recognition give rise to the polysemy of images.

We invite you to engage with the multilayered world of vision proposed by this work, and to reconstruct your own sense of what it means to see.
