Photo slides - about Michiyo Shakunaga and her works

In the present day, when art which relies on technology and media continues to increase, Michiyo Shakunaga is developing her installation using an expressive media of analogue slides. For Michiyo, who is an artist who has continued to use strong and direct expressions coming up through the punk and neo pop eras, slides are not simply a symbol of technology, she uses them as a material for catching an image as an extension of the plane. The still images which are continuously projected directly onto a wall, fading in and out, show the individual images and their relationships to one another. This is different to animations or single pictures. She attempts to free the Self from meaning, reason, feeling and thought, entering into a spiritual experience with the audience by visualising something that is at the root of our consciousness. In her work one can feel something close to the flow of thoughts which occur in the human mind as images appear and fade. The projected images have a flatness which sets them apart from pictures which have the supporting elements of something which has been drawn. They do not have a physical presence, having no sense of depth (as they are like bundles of light which are not conveyed through any materials) and pass through the mind of the viewer as symbolic images. She strives to make the audience percieve these ideas, not through words or meanings, but as images themselves.
